The studio · New York City
We're a design and development shop in New York. Deliberately small: small enough that the person who sketches your homepage is the one who answers your email eight months later.
No account managers. No offshore handoff. One team, one phone number, one invoice.
Why we exist
On one end, freelancers who do lovely work and then vanish for three weeks. On the other, agencies with account managers, strategists, a producer, and a bill that reflects all of them.
We wanted the craft of the first and the reliability of the second, minus the layers. So we built a studio with three rules, hired people who care about the unglamorous parts, and kept it small on purpose.
That's the whole philosophy. Everything else is just work.
The house rules
Every studio has values on a wall somewhere. These are ours, and they're short enough to hold us to. Tap one to see what it costs us.
Where we fit
An honest comparison, including the parts where somebody else is the better call.
| A freelancer | NYC Web Design Studio | A big agency | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who designs it | One person, often excellent | The designer you met, with a developer beside them | A team you may never meet |
| Who you talk to | Them, when they're free | The people doing the work | An account manager |
| What it costs | $ | $$ | $$$$ |
| If they get sick | The project stops | Someone else picks it up that day | You won't notice |
| Process | Informal, varies | Fixed scope, fixed price, weekly demos | Formal, with a deck about the process |
| After launch | Depends who's busy | Care plan, or the keys and a walkthrough video | A retainer |
| Best for | Small sites and tight budgets | Businesses that need it done properly and answered quickly | National campaigns and very large organizations |
If a freelancer is genuinely the right call for your budget, we'll tell you on the first call and point you to a good one.
The team
Not a stock photo of somebody else's team. These are the names on your project. Tap a card for the thing each of them is unreasonably good at.
Placeholders. Replace with real names, roles and photographs before launch. Nothing kills trust faster on an About page than a team that turns out to be stock imagery.
Inside the studio
Drag through the day. No war rooms, no growth hacking, no ping-pong table.
What that means for you
Illustrative. Some days a deploy goes sideways and dinner happens at the desk.
Opinions, held firmly
You can still overrule us. You're the client, and it's your business. But you'll always know what we think and why, before it gets built.

Straight answers
Yes. The studio is in New York City and the phone number in the footer rings at a desk here. We'll happily meet for coffee if you're nearby, and about half our clients are.
Small, and deliberately so. Big enough that nothing stops when one person is out, small enough that nobody needs a status meeting to know where your project stands.
Design and development happen in-house. For specialist work, like photography or video, we bring in people we've worked with for years, and we tell you who they are.
You do. Code, design files, domain, hosting and analytics, all in accounts registered to you from day one. Leaving us should be easy. That's the point.
About half our work is remote, across the country. The only real constraint is time zones, and Eastern is the friendly one.
Then we fit around them. Sometimes we design and your developers build. Sometimes we're the extra pair of hands for a launch. We'll write down who owns what before we start.
No open roles at the moment, and that changes. If you design or build things well and you're in or near New York, send work to info@nycwebdesignstudio.com. Portfolio over résumé: three projects you're proud of, and a sentence on each about what was hard.
Say hello
Tell us what you're working on. We'll tell you what it takes, what it costs and how long it runs, usually within a day. No pitch deck, no six-week sales cycle.
